General Practitioner (GP)

What is a General Practitioner (GP) and what do they do?

A General Practitioner is a general doctor who is usually the first point of contact if a person has a health-related issue. After examining you, the GP can recommend the necessary therapy or send you to a specialist with a medical referral. (Please note that not all specialists need you to bring a referral when visiting them. More on specialists here.)

They can also issue sick leave papers which are needed if you miss a few days from work due to illness.

Who is your GP?

In Hungary, GPs are assigned based on the address of the person. Below you can see a list where you can check to whom you belong.

How can I visit my GP?

The contact information is on the relevant page (see below). Booking before going is strongly recommended. Please note that using the below-mentioned services is only accessible if you hold a valid TAJ card.

What is páros / páratlan in a GP’s schedule?

Your GP’s website may have different schedules depending on the week. Páros means even, and páratlan means odd. You can see if it’s an even or odd week here.

For students in the Óbudai Dormitory

EASTER EGG! THERE ARE ONLY 23 DISTRICTS IN BUDAPEST!

How do I know which district I live in?

Check your 4-digit postcode: the two middle integers indicate your district. For example, Corvin dorm’s postcode is 1082, which means it is located in district 08.

When can you reach them?

Most of the GPs have a weekly schedule: they work either just in the morning or just in the afternoon on a specific day. You can check their opening hours and contact details on the website of the health care centres of the districts.
Note that this also applies to other forms of communication such as phone calls and emails; they probably won’t reply to you outside their opening hours.
The health care system and primary care (GPs) can get overwhelmed frequently so you may have to call them several times or even visit them in person to reach them.

If you run into any issues

Have you tried calling several times, and even visited the doctor’s office and still no luck? If you face issues with reaching your GP, please contact us through the form at the bottom of the page.

Doctors on duty

If you need to see a doctor when your GP is not available (e. g. on weekends), you can visit the closest general doctor on duty („Háziorvosi ügyelet”) – there is one in each district. Keep in mind that they are not your assigned GP therefore there may be issues that they can’t help you with (e.g. sick leave paper). This type of care is for urgent cases so you may have to wait for a long time.
